lesson: cutting/smudging fur so i understand that you've been practicing at this, which is great to hear. now, i'd like you to show me your cutting&smudging on these three images. -- i know that you're more used to doing this with dogs, but i already had a bunch of cat images laying around on my computer, and fur is still fur. but for future lessons, if you could let me know where you obtain your dog stock from, that would be greatly appreciated.-- (:

what i'd actually like you to do is,, paste the whole image onto a white or other light coloured canvas and cut out the cat/dog only. then, smudge the fur, and post the links to the images in this thread.
i'll assess the caliber of the work and determine whether or not some more work is needed in this particular area. once you've completed the two images for this lesson, we'll move on to the next. (:

I haven't forgotten about you! - Holiday stuff, you know. I think I've completed the cat. I shall edit this post when I get it uploaded and the canine finished for you.

Okay. Well, I'm going to start off by saying that I failed miserably on the cat. The hair Was too fine and very... catlike I guess for me right now. X3 However I don't think I did *too* bad on the dog considering that it took me only about 5 -10 minutes. X3 Also, I've found that I have better luck with using the dry media brushes. With the cat I used wet and with the dog I used dry. Cat Photo IDog Photo I

wow, you did a great job ! (:
and whatever brush suits you best is what you should use- so the media brushes seem to be your tools, so go with them. now, you did do a really good job, but they could be better. my advice is to make the fur a bit longer, but they're honestly fine as is. i'm not going to ask you to do anymore for me, because you really have the basics of it, and from this point on, it's just a matter of practicing.
soo... i'll try to post another lesson thread soon, but my semester is almost over, and i'm piled with homework, projects, tests, etc. D:
but, i'll try to log on as much as possible to see your progress, but feel free to take your time, as i understand you must have things going on in your life that are of higher priority, as i do. (:

Right - I'm going to do the lighting today or tomorrow, but here is something I put together yesterday. I used the same smudge brush for the fur as I did to smudge some of the grass upwards - Am I doing this (somewhat) correctly?

I'm not worried about pronto replies, I understand busy schedules. X3
EDIT; Also, I *just* noticed some of the dark spots around t ps of the ears... must work on making sure all of that is edited out still. XD

excellent ! (:
you've definitely got the hang of it now. my only suggestion is that, contrary to the photo, you modify the shape of the dog around the stomach area,, simple because it looks weird to me. : P
unless of course that's what the character looks like... :/
other than that little detail, it's a great job. : D
